Sinif (Biyoloji)
Sınıf ( Latince Classis ), ( İngilizce Class), Eki: -opsida
Carl LINNE'nin (1707-1778) (daha sonra latinceleştirilmiştir: Carolus von LINNAEUS ) 1735 yılında 11 sayfadan oluşan Systema Naturae isimli eserinde yaptığı taksonomik kategorilerdendir. Linné canlıları 5 taksonomik kategori içine yerleştirmiştir. Bunlar:
- Sınıf (Classis)
- Takım (Ordo)
- Cins (Genus)
- Tür (Species)
- Varyete ( Varietas)
Daha sonraları Linné, bitki ve hayvanların isimlendirilmesi için ikili adlandırma (Binomial nomenklatür)yani, 2 sözcükten oluşan (Cins adı+Epitet adı=TÜR adı) bir sistem geliştirdi. Bu sistem halen geçerliliğini korumaktadır. Günümüzde taksonomik kategoriler ve canlı gruplarına göre isimlendirmede kullanılan son ekler şöyledir:

Sistematik de, hiyerarşik olarak benzer bireyler türü (Species), benzer türler cinsi (Genus), benzer cinsler familyayı (Familia), benzer familyalar takımı (Ordo), benzer takımlar sınıfı(Classis), benzer sınıflar şube(bölüm)leri(Divisio-Phylum) meydana getirir. Tüm bu taksonlar, filogenetik akrabalıklarına göre dizilir. Bu şekilde doğal sınıflandırmada benzer taksonlar, bir üstteki kategorinin (taksonun) kapsamına sokulur. Geri doğru gittikçe taksonlar büyür ve kapsamları genişler.
